The author first learned about Nzingha of Angola from a promotional poster entitled "Great Kings and Queens of Africa," produced by Anheuser Busch Brewery, Inc. Although the biographical note that accompanied the portrait was limited, it was enough to inspire the author to find out more about the warrior-diplomat who for decades held Portuguese invaders in check.
